Gems of the World

Gems of the WorldWe recently tasted four unique wines imported by Kobrand Wine and Spirits. These wine gems of the world differed by variety, location and price point. For example, the brands include a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a red blend and a Fiano from Italy, and an Argentinian Malbec. In addition, their price points range from $19 (Malbec) to $50 (Cab Sauv). Above all, despite these disparities, the wines have one thing in common – we recommend all of them. Read on for details.

Wine Gems of the World

Since 1944, Kobrand has imported a distinguished portfolio of brands representing virtually every major wine region of the world. Consequently, we were delighted to receive samples of four of their brands to taste.

Sequoia Grove Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 ($50)

Gems of the World Cab SauvTo craft this classically rich wine, Sequoia Grove topped 83% Cabernet Sauvignon with 8% Merlot, 6% Cab Franc and 1% each of Syrah, Malbec and Petit Verdot. As a result, a silky, elegant and powerful wine entices from your glass. Aromas of black cherries, blackberries and a hint of mocha, fig and smoked meat lead into flavors of more black fruit, savory notes and hints of vanilla and cinnamon. Pair it with grilled meats and vegetables. Drink it now or age up to 10 years.

Tenuta di Biserno Insoglio del Cinghiale Toscana IGT 2018 ($45)

Italian Super TuscanThis Super Tuscan from Tenuta di Biserno has a unique blend: 33% each of Syrah and Merlot, 14% each of Cab Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by 6% Petit Verdot. Created by the premier winemaking Antinori family, this gorgeous blend is structured and luscious. Insoglio features flavors of dark fruits, spice, black olives and milk chocolate. The peppery Syrah notes make it ideal to pair with game dishes such as wild boar (cinghiale, the name of this wine), venison or even barbecue chicken. Serve it slightly chilled at summer events.

Villa Matilde Fiano di Avellino 2018 ($25)

Wine Gems Fiano This is 100% Fiano, a relatively new grape to the U.S. from Italy. Villa Matilde Fiano di Avellino is a floral and fruity white wine, with pear, apple and hazelnut flavors, and a hint of honey with a saline finish. This beautiful, balanced white wine also features good acidity. You could drink it now, but it also has an aging capacity of up to five years. This lovely wine will complement seafood salad, cheeses, baked or grilled fish, or tagliatelle with prawns, scallops or vegetables in a creamy white sauce.

Bodega Norton Reserva Malbec 2018 ($19)

Argentinian MalbecThis Bodega Norton Reserva 100% Malbec is made from selected grapes from 30-50-year-old vineyards. This is a bold, lush Argentinian Malbec, which is characterized by its elegance and complexity, as well as a great price point. Aromas of black fruits, spices and tobacco lead into flavors of plums, blackberries and savory notes, in addition to dark chocolate, coffee, cedar, tea and spice. Bring on the steak! Moreover, the 2018 vintage is an excellent representation of the unique terroir of Mendoza. Drink now or put it away for a few years.
