Glasses of red and white wineEvery year around this time, we love to share stats and facts about the wonderful wine industry in Washington state. Therefore, we hope you enjoy this 2020 version, courtesy of Washington Wine.

Firstly, the number of wineries grew to more than 1,000, compared to 19 in 1981. Secondly, more than 70 varieties of grapes are grown now. That compares to 30 just six short years ago. Thirdly, the ratio is 59% red and 41% white, a flip from 55% white and 45% red six years ago. Don’t Miss Taste WA 2020 – Tickets on Sale Friday

Taste Washington 2020A record-breaking 8,479 local, national and international visitors attended Taste Washington last year. Make sure you’re one of them this year, March 19-22 in Seattle.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 17, and there is a lot to experience at what we like to call The Super Bowl of Wine Events in Washington state. It’s the country’s largest single-region wine and food extravaganza.

You don’t want to miss out on what Forbes calls “an epic party that lasts for days.” We go every year and always look forward to the explosion of tastes, fun and education during the four-day event.

Grape Clones at Red Willow Vineyard

Red Willow Vineyard's stone chapel is one of the most recognizable buildings in Washington wine countryWe recently stopped by Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley and spent an incredible afternoon with the Sauer family, Washington wine royalty.

As mentioned in our previous post, one of the highlights of our visit was learning about Mike Sauer’s clone program, which he started with Master of Wine David Lake in 2005. The two Washington wine legends experimented with different cuttings certified from UC Davis Viticulture and Enology. Their clone program continues today.

Coming Up – Taste Washington!

The 21st annual Taste Washington is March 22-25 in Seattle — the country’s largest single-region wine and food extravaganza. We go every year and always look forward to the explosion of tastes, fun and education during the four-day event.

This year, Taste Washington features more than 230 wineries, 65 restaurants and some of the nation’s top chefs. Although both days of the Grand Tasting are sold out, there are lots of other events still available.
