We just got back from a whirlwind tour of WA wine country – 15 wineries in three days. The highlights included Caprio Cellars, Saviah Cellars, Devison Vintners, L’Ecole 41, Upchurch Vineyard, Fidelitas and Va Piano Vineyards. We also spent time at Reynvaan, Prospice, Rasa Vineyards, The Walls, Gramercy Cellars, Mercer, Valdemar and Maison Bleue. Moreover, the food was excellent and the sunsets divine. Most people think of L’Ecole 41 as a major, well-known wine producer in Washington state. And they would be right. L’Ecole, the third-oldest winery in Walla Walla, produces about 45,000 cases of wine each year. L’Ecole is also one of the most honored wineries in the state, generating international accolades for its superior quality wines. But wait a minute. L’Ecole artisan wine is also very noteworthy. Every year, we love to share WA Wine fun facts about the wonderful wine industry in Washington state. Therefore, we hope you enjoy this updated 2020 version, courtesy of Washington Wine. First, Cabernet is still King in this state (29% of crop), followed by Chardonnay (16%). Riesling, Merlot and Syrah round out the top five, which altogether equate to more than 80% of the crop. Second, Cab Franc received the highest average price per ton. Overall, for four years now, red varieties account for nearly 60% of the total WA crop.
