VITAL Wines
Founder and President Ashley Trout created VITAL Wines, a non-profit winery with proceeds to provide local Washington state vineyard and winery workers with access to affordable health care. Practically every part of their winemaking process is made possible by donations, including grapes and production services. “All profits go toward open-door, free clinics or other healthcare sources for our local wine workers.” Moreover, Ashley’s goal is to help deliver healthcare equity for everyone in the local wine industry. What an impressive woman. We talked to her at a VITAL Wines event in Seattle earlier this month. Read on for details.

Recent Canvasback Releases
If you’re looking for an exceptional glass of wine for that special occasion, look no further. All six of these recent Canvasback releases (three Cabernet Sauvignons, two Syrahs and a Malbec) are striking. But many other words also describe them, including sophisticated, polished, luscious, appealing, hedonistic and killer. Canvasback has it all. Duckhorn pioneers Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded the winery in 2012, and named it after the Canvasback duck, native to the Pacific Flyway. Every winter, we are fortunate to see Canvasbacks in our little backyard lake. Each year, just like the duck, Canvasback wines soar.
Walla Walla Wine On Tour

f you can’t make it to Walla Walla, the next best thing is to go to “Walla Walla Wine on Tour.” We drove to Seattle to do just that, and it was a perfect opportunity to celebrate stellar Walla Walla wine. We visited winemakers we’ve known for a while, like Trey Busch at Sleight of Hand Cellars and Joe Czarny at Canvasback, and said hello again to Emily Kiefer, the hospitality goddess at Caprio Cellars. In addition, we met some others for the first time – Doug Frost of Echolands, Tim Lenihan of Dossier, and Kelsey Albro Itämeri from itä wines. We tasted impressive new vintages of old favorites and enjoyed amazing wines that are new to us. Cheers to Walla Walla wine! And happy 40th anniversary to the AVA!
