Summer time means it’s grilling season! So bring out the glasses and fire up the BBQ. To complement ribs, juicy hamburgers or steaks, here are some rich reds that we’ve tasted recently from Washington, Oregon and California. In addition, don’t forget the reds that pair so well with salmon, halibut or swordfish barbecued on cedar planks.
We’ve been fans of Kevin Correll’s Barrage Cellars since we first met him in 2008. Kevin runs a one-man operation in the true Garagiste fashion with a focus on terroir and 100% varietals. Like many winemakers in Washington state, Kevin started making wine as a hobby in his garage; from there, he moved his craft to a winery in a remodeled barn. Put the two words barn and garage together – Bar+rage – and voila, Barrage Cellars was born.
Last month, we visited Kevin at his tasting room in the Woodinville Wine Warehouse District. We’ve always enjoyed his stellar wines. But let me tell you, Kevin’s wines simply get better and better with each vintage. Every time we think we’ve tasted his best wine yet, he surprises us the following year with an even better one.

Happy New Year! As we begin 2020, it’s time for our annual Favorite Washington Wineries List for the previous year. The way to get on our list is fairly simple. Above all, wineries must offer great juice and good people who provide an excellent wine experience.
Perhaps we had fun or learned something in a tasting room, a wine shop tasting, or at a wine event. Maybe someone from a winery sent us a personal note or wine samples. Likewise, we were occasionally invited to an incredible winery party.
Most noteworthy, the people who made our experience special are the winemakers, the tasting room staff, and the amazing workers in the vineyards where it all begins.
The Auction of Washington Wines hit a new milestone during its annual weekend extravaganza of charitable wine events Aug. 15-17. This year, auction events raised more than $4.5 million, exceeding last year’s record $4.1 million. Proceeds benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital and Washington State University’s Viticulture & Enology Program.
“The Washington wine industry and its community are the perfect pair for this annual event, which had a new, palpable energy this year that attracted a vibrant audience, including veteran attendees and newcomers alike,” said AWW Executive Director, Jamie Peha.
On Aug. 15, we attended the Winemaker Picnic & Barrel Auction at Chateau Ste. Michelle. All the Washington wines we tasted at the picnic were terrific, but there was a handful of standouts that really pleased our palates.
