Recent San Felice Wines

San Felice WinesLast year, we became acquainted with San Felice wines, and they quickly enticed us from the historic estate located in the heart of Chianti Classico territory. As a result, we happily accepted samples of these two impressive Italian reds. San Felice Vigorello 2020 marks the 52nd vintage of the first Supertuscan produced in Chianti Classico. Bell’Aja Bolgheri 2021 showcases how Bordeaux meets the terroir of Bolgheri. Read on for more details.

Historic San Felice

San Felice EstateThe San Felice estate covers about 685 hectares in Tuscany’s three most prestigious production zones: Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Bolgheri. It also includes about 15,000 olive trees. Moreover, the estate features a luxurious five-star hotel, Borgo San Felice, two restaurants (Michelin restaurant Il Poggio Rosso and Osteria del Grigio), Bar Archi, and the Botanic Spa.

At an altitude of about 1,300 feet above sea level, San Felice credits a perfect combination of soil and micro-climate, together with a wide temperature range, for producing superb wines and oils.

Just a few miles from Siena, the area was owned by the Grisaldi del Taja family from 1700 to 1968. Of note, the initial Supertuscan, Vigorello, was created at the estate in 1968. At that time, Vigorello comprised 100% Sangiovese. Subsequently, the Allianz Group transformed the aristocratic estate into a wine-growing and winemaking business.

In 1979, Vigorello blended Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Next, in 2001, San Felice added Merlot, which, five years later, entirely replaced Sangiovese. In 2011, the estate discovered and introduced Pugnitello, an ancient, native vine, and then blended it with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. 2020 Vigorello Toscana IGT  ($64)

Vigorello 2020As mentioned, in 1968, San Felice created Vigorello, 100% Sangiovese, which became the first of a new generation of Tuscan wines now known as Supertuscans. Likewise, Vigorello remains San Felice’s signature wine today. Over time, San Felice blended more grape varieties into Vigorello. The current 2020 vintage comprises 35% Pugnitello, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot.

We love this powerhouse wine. The blend of grapes sings to our palates. It’s an outstanding, dense, rich, earthy and structured red wine. Aromas of black and red currants, blackberries, black cherries and sweet spices mirror the palate, along with hints of vanilla, cassis and chocolate. We decanted it for several hours, and it paired perfectly with our barbecued steak dinner. But we recommend putting it in the cellar for a few more years. This iconic wine is recognized for its longevity, with an aging potential of 15-20 years.

2021 Bell’Aja Bolgheri DOC ($30)

San Felice Bell'aja Bolgheri DOC 2021Bell’Aja is a Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend that goes well with winter fare. A “second-vin,” Bell’Aja is testimony to how a Bordeaux blend harmoniously meets the local terroir. Think berry preserves, baking spices and plums, with subtle chocolate and licorice notes. The estate recommends pairing this balanced and complex wine with ravioli with duck sauce, grilled lamb chops or roasted pork. We also think this delicious red wine complements hearty stews and roasts.

In conclusion, San Felice’s lineup ranges from the wallet-friendly, to mid-priced Bell’Aja 2021, to special-occasion Vigorello 2020. This means you can find an appropriately amazing wine for the holidays.
