Goosecross Cellars in Napa Valley

One of our favorite experiences in Napa Valley recently was at Goosecross Cellars. The key word is “experience” because at Goosecross we tasted some excellent wine, met some fabulous and smart people, and had a lot of fun. That’s a winning combination. In addition, Goosecross gets extra points – lots of them — for being so involved in social media. Goosecross owner David Topper is @goosecross on Twitter; he and co-owner/wife Colleen offer Napa Valley Wine Radio (podcasts with feeds on iTunes and iPhone), video and a blog. And they’re on Facebook. There’s even a Goosecross  Cellars Concierge to help plan your visit to Napa Valley.

David sums it up on the website:  “Here at Goosecross our first priority has always been to establish a personal relationship with every customer. With that in mind, we’ve created this highly interactive education community. We offer wine education, entertainment, and wine appreciation information from an insider’s perspective and invite you to become involved.”

And let’s not forget the wines – co-owner and winemaker Geoff Gorsuch excels at both whites and reds. Regular readers of this blog know that I’m not a big fan of whites. But on a hot Napa Valley day, Goosecross Cellars 2007 Sauvignon Blanc was perfect! It was refreshing – with a particularly noticeable and pleasant lingering finish of grapefuit mixed with pineapple.

Another favorite was 2006 AmerItal Red. This “American Italian” blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Barbera was amazing — rich, juicy and, we discovered when we got home, a perfect companion to Dave’s delicious spaghetti.

And, since Cab is King of the Valley, I must give a nod to Goosecross Cellars 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet. As Matt McCollough, the friendly staff member pouring for us, declared: “Howell Mountain Cabernet screams out for a nice fat T-bone steak.”  This cab has it all – rich, intense and aromatic with firm tannins. Hey Dave – it’s time to barbeque!

This wasn’t our first trip to Goosecross Cellars – we’ve taken home their bottles etched with greetings for special occasions, and stared longingly at the decadent chocolate-dipped wine bottles too. But this trip was special because we also had a wonderful time with David and Colleen, and we feel like we made new friends.

Goosecross has the whole package – and we know we’ll go back again and again.

Cheers!
