Summer time means it’s grilling season! So bring out the glasses and fire up the BBQ. To complement ribs, juicy hamburgers or steaks, here are some rich reds that we’ve tasted recently from Washington, Oregon and California. In addition, don’t forget the reds that pair so well with salmon, halibut or swordfish barbecued on cedar planks.
Lula Cellars is located on a 22-acre property located in Philo, just a couple of hours north of San Francisco. In the area known as “The Deep End” of Anderson Valley, some of its more famous winery neighbors are Twomey and Navarro Vineyards. We recently tasted four balanced, complex and lovely Lula wines – three Pinot Noirs and a Rosé of Pinot Noir. We enjoyed them all, and so did our friends who shared them with us.
Summer is around the corner and it’s time to rosé all day! Yes, it’s time to drink pink on the patio, oceanside or poolside. We sip it on our deck lakeside on warm evenings, and watch its pretty color match the gorgeous Washington sunset.
Pair food-friendly rosé with seafood, triple-cream cheeses, shellfish, smoked salmon, salads, pasta, grilled chicken, grilled lamb, Asian dishes or red-berry desserts. Or simply drink rosé without food, as a refreshing summer sipper.

We recently attended a grand tasting at the annual Vancouver International Wine Festival, and had a fantastic time. This year’s focus was on France, with 42 wineries representing the country’s diverse wine regions. In total, 162 wineries from 16 countries poured at 57 events over the eight-day festival. Consequently, about 1,450 wines were shared with 25,000 participants.
Meanwhile, the International Festival Tasting Room formed the heart of the event, where some 780 wines were available for sampling at the grand tastings. Read on for some favorites.
