We were first introduced to Bayernmoor Cellars last year, not long after the winery opened in Stanwood in western Washington. Focusing on European-style wines, Bayernmoor showcases the beautiful grapes grown in a six-acre estate vineyard of Pinot Noir in addition to Otis, Klipsun and Celio. Just in time for the holidays, we were fortunate to taste three lovely Bayernmoor wines: 2018 Chardonnay, 2017 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir and 2017 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
Bayernmoor Cellars 2018 Chardonnay (SRP $29)
This 2018 Chardonnay blends fruit from Celilo, one of the top Washington vineyards for Chardonnay, and Otis vineyard. Bayernmoor Chardonnay offers aromas and flavors of pear, nectarine, mineral, lemon meringue, vanilla, apples and a hint of hazelnut. This wine would go well with many holiday dishes and sides, in addition to crab, mussels, halibut or cod. Or keep it simple, and sip it with cheddar cheese in front of a toasty fireplace. Of note, this Chard brought home Double Gold from the Seattle Wine Awards, and Gold from both the Bellingham NW Wine Competition and Sunset International Wine Competition.
Bayernmoor Cellars 2017 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir (SRP $39)
Just in time for Thanksgiving, this first vintage of Bayernmoor 2017 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir will pair perfectly with your turkey feast. This beautiful Pinot opens up with aromas and flavors of rhubarb, black cherry, strawberry, clove, vanilla and caramel. But you’ll find it will complement more than turkey. Try it with salmon, beef bourguignon or baked brie. Not surprisingly, it won Double Gold at the Seattle Wine Awards and Bellingham NW Wine Competition, and Gold from the SF Chronicle and Cascadia International Wine Competitions.
Bayernmoor Cellars 2017 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $41)
This is a powerful and complex Cabernet Sauvignon, but it requires decanting if you want to drink it now. Or preferably, you could put it down for a few years and wait for the beauty to emerge even further. With grapes sourced exclusively from Red Mountain’s Klipsun vineyard, this is even richer and more opulent than the previous vintage. Aromatics of blackberries, raspberries, dark chocolate, cedar, graphite and mocha lead into dark fruit, and more mocha and chocolate. Sip and savor this lush wine with steak, grilled meats or aged cheeses. Of note, Klipsun has been named one of the top 25 vineyards in the world by Wine & Spirits.
Summary
In conclusion, you still have time to order these wines for the holidays. This year looks a lot different than in the past because the pandemic means many people, including us, are celebrating the holidays at home. But you can still enjoy these wines with good food and your immediate family, and hope that better days are ahead.
Thanks, Bayernmoor, for these samples.
